दिल्ली की वो शान था

बरदई जी के सामने , गौरी से वो हारा था
लेकर तीर कमान फिर, गौरी को उसने मारा था
अजमेर से आया था, दिल्ली की वो शान था
बारवी शताब्दी का वो राजा, पृथ्वी राज चौहान था

(Chand Bardai composed the Prithviraj Raso, an epic poem in Hindi about the life of Prithviraj Chauhan (1149–1192 CE), was a Rajput king of the Chauhan dynasty, who ruled the kingdoms of Ajmer and Delhi in northern India)

ग़ज़नी पर कब्ज़ा, गौरी कर के आया था
इब्न सूरी का बदला, लेकर घर से आया था
कुतुबों को हराने वाला, गजब वो सुलतान था
दे दी दिल्ली ऐबक को, अजब उसका दान था

(Mohammad Ghori took the city of Ghazni in 1173 to avenge the death of his ancestor Muhammad ibn Suri at the hands of Mahmud of Ghazni and used it as a launching-pad for expansion into northern India. In 1206, Mohammad Ghori, having settled the affairs in India, left all the affairs in India in hands of his slave Qutb-ud-din Aibak. Construction of Qutb Minar was started in 1192 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak )

दसवां राजा कुतुबों का, खोया था जब जाम में
ख़िलजी सैनिक राजा हो गया, दिल्ली की उस शाम में
रतन सिंह को कैद कर लिया, चित्तोर गढ़ पर वार हुआ
तेरा सौ में ख़िलजी को, पदमा से जब प्यार हुआ

(Ala-ud-din Khilji’s attack on Chittor in 1303 CE to capture the queen of Chittor, Rani Padmini, the wife of King Rawal Ratan Singh and the subsequent story have been immortalized in the epic poem Padmavat, written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Courts to the east of Quwwat ul-Islam mosque, in Qutb complex added by Khilji in 1300 CE. Alauddin’s Madrasa, Qutb complex, Mehrauli, which also has his tomb to the south.)

गुजरात की चाहत में, ख़िलजी ने चढ़ाई कर दी
बदला लेकर खुसरो ने, तुग़लक़ से लड़ाई कर दी
तेरा सौ अठानबे में, तैमूर ने कमजोर किया
तुग़लक़ सारे ख़त्म हो गए, ख़िज़्र खान ने रोर किया

(Khusrau Khan got Sultan Khilji killed by his friend Jahiriya. In 1320 Khusrau Khan managed to kill Alauddin Khilji’s son, Sultan Qutb ud din Mubarak Shah, ending the Khilji dynasty. He was defeated and killed by Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq, who founded the Tughlaq dynasty in 1320 in Delhi. Wazirabad mosque, near Delhi, was built during Firoz Shah Tughlaq reign.)

सय्यिद ने जब दिल्ली छोड़ी, चौदह सौ तिरतालिस में
लोधी वंश तब शुरू हुआ, चौदह सौ सैंतालिस में
बहलूल का मक़बरा, चिराग दिल्ली में बना
इब्राहिम को जब तख़्त मिला, बाग़ दिल्ली में बना

(Sayyid dynasty was established by Khizr Khan, deputised by Timur to be the governor of Multan (Punjab). Khizr Khan took Delhi from Daulat Khan Lodi on May 28, 1414 and founded the Sayyid dynasty. )

पंद्रह सौ छबीस में , मर गया इब्राहिम लोधी
बाबर की सेना ने, खत्म कर दिया वंश ये लोधी
मुग़ल काल की दिल्ली का, बाबर वो सुलतान था
पानीपत में जीत गया जब, वक़्त वो बलवान था

(Ibrahim Lodhi was the last ruler of the Lodhi dynasty, reigning for nine years between 1517 until being defeated and killed at the battle of Panipat by Babur’s invading army in 1526, giving way to the emergence of the Mughal Empire in India. His tomb is often mistaken to be the Sheesh Gumbad within Lodi Gardens Delhi. )

लिख दी हमने ये कविता, दिल्ली के इतिहास पर
वर्मा की कलम चल रही, दिल्ली के विशवॉश पर
शहर में अब विनाश ना हो, उम्मीद यही बस करता हूँ
दिल्ली में बस खुशियाँ आएं, उम्मीद यही बस करता हूँ
