I was trying to open one of my favourite websites and suddenly got a message “You are restricted” . What was that? I went to my security engineer and asked him if site has been blocked by my hosts anti-virus.But he told me that you have tried to open a restricted website. Now there was a question in my mind, who is blocking the website on my laptop. He told me it was some security device that was situated between our LAN network and internet. Whenever any user on the LAN network tries to access any page from any website server, our gateway level device was acting as a guard and was confirming from some content filtering server on internet , if the page i want to see is appropriate or not. After this guard at gateway level gets NO from content filtering server on internet the page was blocked and if the answer from server is YES , then the page was allowed and was send to guard for further approval.This next approval was made by the policies which were setup on the firewall by my Engineer. Oh … so he has blocked my favourite websites. Now my mind was shifted from my favourite website to content filtering done by the gateway level guard known as ZyWALL , the Unified Security Gateway. Thanks to ZyXEL , i am now more dedicated towards technologies, rather than browsing my favourite websites.

No wifi at hotspot cafe

I went to a popular hotspot cafe and suddenly i thought that i have forgotten to send an important greeting mail to my friend.So i opened up my laptop and tried to connect to wifi at this hotspot cafe. I called up the cafe guy and asked him to provide me access to internet but he refused as there was no wifi for customers. Oh my God …Next day… I shared the problem with one of my wireless experts and he told me that ZyXEL had already manufactured an internet billing solution for hotspots. He told me about ZyXEL’s G-4100 V2 wireless device that can be used to provide wifi access to customers at cafe hotspots, restaurants, hotels etc. He told me that there is a printer with this device that will enable cafe manager to provide prepaid internet access service to its customers. The customer will get prepaid internet connection and he can access internet with username and password and can send or receive his important mails which i was unable to send on that bad day ….

Once long back i configured a website hosting apache server in my home and setup a personal website on the server. I typed localhost and was able to browse my PHP/MySQL based website on that linux server. Now i configured a static IP in my TCP/IP settings and tried to browse the website with that IP address and got the webpage. After doing so i was keen to know that if people outside my LAN network can browse my website or not. So i typed my public IP and got the router page there. I was in need to make my public IP open my LAN IP address. This was possible by network address translation in the router. I have done that and opened my firewall for WAN to LAN connections for my LAN server. Now after doing that i typed the public ip and was unable to browse my website. I called up my Technical Manager and shared my problem with him. He told me that what i was requiring is NAT loopback feature which my router was not supporting and he told me that this feature was available in the USG 100 provided by ZyXEL. I was more happy to know that ZyXEL was providing solutions to all the problems i was facing and i was becoming more knowledgeable day by day. Hats off to ZyXEL Team !
