Bio-diversity Loss can be Controlled by Knowledge of Invasive Plants

Do you know why it is important to control expansion of non-native plant species in particular country. This is because most of the invasive plants leads to low down the growth of native plants due to which our ecosystem gets negatively affected. Let’s take example of United states, Lythrum salicaria, the plant they have imported from Europe and temperate Asia, dominates the growth of native plant species due to it’s intense speed of growth and expansion.

Most of such invasive plants disperse through wind and birds, crowding out the native species. The biggest danger is for human beings & wildlife who are dependent on native plants which are ultimately suppressed by these invasive species.

Many plants which foreign countries introduce as ornamental plants, spread extensively and inhibit growth of plants which farmers generate their livelihood from. Vilayati Keekar is one of such invasive species that was introduced to India due to it’s drought tolerance and fuel wood, but now has shown great expansion in all over India, transforming agricultural lands forcing people to seek new livelihood opportunities. There is loss of billions of dollars due to damages caused by invasive species to agriculture and forestry. And this is not only about invasive plants, but also include other species like snails, fishes and insects.

There should be holistic study done to understand the effect of these invasive species, to control their expansion. On the other hand, it become extremely important to grow native trees and plants around us. Prevention of the introduction of invasive species is of utter importance for us. To carry out preventive efforts is a big task but anyone who is doing mass plantation needs understanding about invasive and native plants.
