COVID-19 Impact on Environment & Learnings for Human Beings

COVID-19 impact on environment and public health

As per this story by bbc.com Columbia University researchers found that carbon monoxide mainly from cars had been reduced by nearly 50% compared with last year. Knowing that cars killed over 6,000 pedestrians in 2018 in the US, and air pollution kills perhaps 200,000 more here each year, 50% reduction in pollution could result in dramatic improvement in pubic health. As per Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, higher Covid-19 death rates are proportional to air pollution. Small increase in long-term exposure to the pollutants leads to significantly higher mortality.

COVID-19 scary alert for human beings

As per recent story published by India Today, Dr Ian Lipkin, who is the John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and Professor of Neurology and Pathology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, COVID-19 pandemic should not be considered as the worst pandemic human beings are facing, more health crises and surprises are waiting for us if we fail to control and balance activities like deforestation, population migration, international trade and travel and climate change. There is a urgent need to work on solutions which should immediately stop disturbance to the natural environment.

As per Sunil Dahiya, an analyst based in New Delhi for Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), “Pollution is going down, but we cannot let the suffering of so many human beings be the way to clean the air,” Dahiya said.”We can only use the outbreak of coronavirus as a learning lesson for us.”
